I went out west to fish Wyoming and Montana. I had a wonderful time and the scenery was absolutely gorgeous!!! The temperatures were warm (98 was the highest we experienced) but the evenings were pleasant and the mornings were cool (low 50's).
We fished the Shoshone River for 2 days and caught Cutthroat and Rainbow trout (and a few mountain whitefish). The river is a freestone (no dam, a natural river) so all the water was from mountain snow melt. The average water temperature was 40-42 degrees.
The next day we went to a mountain meadow (at 9862 ft) to fish for brook trout in the Tongue River. Caught a few small Brookies and a few cutts but the mosquitoes were HUGE and the horse flies were eating us alive.
We then headed on to the Bighorn River in Montana. The water temperature was around 44-48 degrees. There was a HUGE hatch of Black Caddis flies and we caught the beginning of the Grasshopper season. We caught really big Rainbows and Browns using Pheasant Tail nymphs, Sowbugs and Sparkle Nymphs (all #18 - #20 hooks). We had a wonderful time.
