By fishtexas at Fri, 2010-02-12 08:00 | Bass Fishing

Largemouth bass are by far the most popular fish species on Lake Conroe Texas.  While not plentiful, large bass have been caught, with the lake record of 14.1 lbs in 1997. Lake Conroe is located in Montgomery county Texas, approximately 40 miles north of Houston Texas on I-45. Impounded in 1973, Lake Conroe has an area of 20,118 acres with a pool level of 201 ft msl and a fluctuation of  1 to 3 ft a year. Water is clear to algal stained.
Fish species are, Largemouth bass Bluegill Channel catfish White & hybrid striped bass. Lake Conroe has mostly open water in the lower part of the lake, with timber along the river channel in the northern part of the lake. Most of the timber is submerged at pool level, making it hazardous in some parts of the lake. There are plentiful boat docks along the shore on the lower lake with the northern lake is primarily sparse. Some plants are on the shoreline but it is mostly bare.
Tips & Tactics
Largemouth bass can be taken in shallower water, around boat docks and marinas, in the early spring to late fall. In other months, bass are in deeper cover. Try using shad colored lures such as Super Flukes or other soft plastics.
Striped Bass are becoming more popular on Lake Conroe because they can be caught any time of the year. Try open water on the lake using live shad or a jigging spoon. In the spring spawning season, try river channels as they are feeding on white bass schools.
Channel catfish can be caught all year along the shore in about 8 ft of water. Target Rip-Rap shorelines using worms or crickets.
In Conclusion: Lake Conroe is a very popular lake, so make any reservations well in advance. It is also a good day trip destination.
