It has a surface area of approximately 21,400 acres, with a depth of 59 ft. Lake Lavon was created in 1953 and expanded in 1974 which nearly doubled it's size. The pool level is 492 ft. with a moderate annual fluctuation. The water clarity is greenish in color with good visibility.
According to the latest Lake Lavon, Fishing, update, vegetation on Lake Lavon is very sparse with a little pondweed and some coontail along the shore. The main fish species on Lake Lavon are Black Bass, which is rated good fishing, followed by catfish which is also rated good and crappie fishing, which is excellent. White bass on Lake Lavon are good, striped bass are only fair, with sunfish being excellent.
Lake Lavon is known for it's spring and winter Crappie fishing.
Standing timber is the main structure, mainly on the north end of the lake near the Trinity River area and Grove Creek area. Check for grass in the back of coves. If you see any cattail out in the water, check it out for a few fish.
The electric plant can attract fish in the cooler months when water temperature falls below the fish comfort level. This can be some good fishing near the dam.
In the cooler months Lake Lavon, Fishing for crappie are schooling on the south shore in deeper water structure. They go to shallow water in the spring and this makes for some good crappie angling. Try minnows and jigs for this species.
Lake Lavon, Fishing update says the Black Bass are active mostly in the spring when they spawn in shallow water. Try Carolina lizards in the 6 inch range and Texas worms and crankbaits. At the beginning of the cold months, try crawfish colored cranks or spinner baits in white.
Lake Lavon, Fishing update says that Catfish are good at the beginning of summer when spawning begins in the riprap near the dam. Lake Lavon, Fishing update indicates to Fish for Striped bass all year in open areas or near the power plant. Try live or plastic shad, or your favorite surface bait.
