Proper Maintenance for your Fishing Rods and Reels
Proper Maintenance for your Fishing Rods and Reels
We all know saltwater can be as hard on your equipment as the fish you catch so here's a few tips to keep your rods and reels in the best shape so they will last as long as possible.
The first thing you can do to protect your investment is to always rinse your saltwater rods and reels with freshwater after your done fishing. Point the spool end of your reel down and use a light spray to rinse the line on the spool after every fishing session.
Remember to service your equipment often, just because it was built to last doesn't mean it will. Your saltwater rods and especially the reels need to be cleaning and lubricated periodically for top performance.
How long has the line been on your reel? Dose it shine or is it dull? Dull looking line usually means old line. Using the same line for too long can stress the line, after a while if you don't replace it the possibility of loosing that once in a lifetime lunker becomes much greater. This is by far one of the simplest, and lowest cost effective ways to insure the least amount of problems on the water.
Store your gear when not using it. Saltwater is not the only enemy of your gear, if left in your boat or in the back of your truck under the blazing sun for months at a time, the sun will also wreak havoc on your saltwater fishing rods. Put it away so you can enjoy it another day.
