Volunteers needed for Apache Lake habitat improvement project

By admin at Wed, 2006-11-15 21:47 | | Arizona Fishing News

Get out your work gloves, roll up the sleeves, and get ready to invest some sweat equity into the future of Apache Lake.

Salt River Project is lowering the Apache Lake level for work on the dam, exposing lots of lakebed. The Arizona Game and Fish Department is taking advantage of this opportunity to give this fishery a boost by conducting a fish habitat improvement project from Nov. 18 to Dec. 17.

If you, your family or your group (or business) would like to volunteer to help, contact Jim Warnecke, the Phoenix/Mesa-area fisheries program manager, at (480) 324-3541 or jwarnecke@azgfd.gov.

"Remember, your volunteer time and effort not only helps build new habitat for largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, bluegill, black crappie and channel catfish, but also counts as match for the department to receive federal Sport Fish and Wildlife Restoration dollars for this project, as well," says Warnecke. "Come on out and be part of this worthwhile effort for your fisheries resources!"

Work duties for the Apache Lake fish habitat improvement project will involve moving construction materials, such as tree limbs, cement blocks and pallets, from a fenced storage yard to the lake shore and ultimately to pre-selected habitat development sites on the lakebed.
