Everything Biting At North Skyway Pier

I spoke with the North Skyway Fishing Pier this morning, and they say that every thing is biting. Huge schools of small white bait have invaded the pier, bringing all of the predator fish with them. Use a sabiki rig or a cast net with a 1/4" mesh to gather your bait.Spanish mackerel, large bluefish, and bonita are creating most of the action. About 6" of wire leader is needed to prevent cut offs from there razor sharp teeth. If the fish start shying away from the wire, switch to 6' of 40lb to 60lb mono or fluorocarbon leader and long shanked hooks. After every hit, check your leader for nicks and re-tie if needed. The whitebait are the best bait right now but small silver spoons and Got-Cha Plugs will also work. A few king mackerel are being caught. Tie a balloon above your leader with a rubber band and float you bait away from the pier. Blue runners, hardtails, and greenbacks will be the best baits. Use a stinger rig to increase your odds of hooking the kings. Tarpon and cobia are hitting on top of the water. Watch for them cruising the pier and try to drop your bait in there path, but far enough ahead of the fish, to not spook them. A few grouper are being caught off of the bottom. White bait and pinfish will be the best baits. For more information contact;North Skyway Fishing Pier727-865-066810501 Sunshine Skyway BridgeSt Petersburg, FL 33711http://www.skywaypiers.com/

Charter Fishing in Ft. Lauderdale 2/23/07

This was an interesting week fishing in Fort Lauderdale. Our Open Boat Friday Night Swordfish trip did pretty good. The Catch My Drift, the boat we run our Friday Night Swordfish trip on, has been on an awesome run of fish lately. The past few weeks we've caught multiple swordfish on many nights and a couple really huge ones. A 300 pounder was caught one Friday night this month, and another fish that was about 200 pounds, not to mention the night we caught 3 in the same trip. This week was slower than our past few weeks but we still caught a 51" forklength swordfish. The fish was about 60-70 pounds and it was the only one we caught that night.

63-Pound Blue Cat Almost Make Florida’s Record Books

Ponce de Leon angler Doyle Ammons has caught plenty of fish over his 76 years. None of his fish compare, however, to the near-record 63-pound blue catfish he recently caught on Florida’s Choctawhatchee River.

Ammons’ fish was 48 inches long and would have almost certainly been certified as the new Florida record, except for one thing – he caught his fish on a bush hook, sometimes called a “limb line.” It is legal to fish with bush hooks or trotlines, but fish caught by such methods are not eligible for certification as new records. Only record freshwater fish caught by conventional hook-and-line or rod-and-reel can be accepted.

Searchers Locate Body Of Commercial Fisherman

Just after 1 p.m. Tuesday, searchers found the body of 71-year-old commercial fisherman Duane Martina of Apalachicola next to his boat on the Apalachicola River.

Law enforcement officers had been looking for Martina since late Monday night when his family advised he was overdue from running his crab traps. Martina was last seen Monday morning on the river just north of Apalachicola.

A Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) helicopter spotted Martina's 15-foot boat 20-30 feet off the river in sawgrass about three-fourths of a mile north of town.

"The motor was in neutral and tilted out of the water. We can only surmise but it appears he had run his boat up in the sawgrass, had gotten out of it and was trying to push the boat back to the river when something happened," said FWC Capt. Donald Duval. "We'll know more when an autopsy is complete."

The search involved the Franklin County Sheriff's Office, FWC, U.S. Coast Guard, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and numerous family members and friends of the Martina family.

LOWER KEYS FISHING REPORT FROM CAPTAIN FRANK PIKU YACHT GOLDEN STREAKER

The greatest news from National Marine Fisheries Service NOAA is the comeback of the Goliath Groupers. This has been a successful comeback of these awesome fish. Many anglers are hooking up and landing these great gigantic fish. Of course all must be returned to the ocean . This is a no take fish . These large fish can go into the hundreds of pounds and are great big monsters to bring up. But they are also very gentle and eat many undesirable fish as there food source. Many think they eat up our best game fish but the really eat as there diet the most rough fish in the ocean.
