Yeah, you guessed it. More trophy Maryland rockfish caught in the Chesapeake Bay! Just check out these beautiful striped bass. Check out the picture from Monday, April 27, 2009 on www.sawyercharters.com/fishing.htm. It was another solid day for us, fishing for striped bass on Maryland's Chesapeake Bay! We had to wait them out through the morning, but those fish finally got their act together. As we were getting our lines pulled up to end the day, we had five lines go down at one time! Just check out what these long-time customers came away with! Everybody went home with a fish!

Friday, April 24, 2009 was another excellent day of fishing for striped bass on Maryland's Chesapeake Bay with Sawyer Charters! We had two trips on Friday, one in the morning and one in the afternoon. The morning picture was too big to attach to the blog. These guys had their limit in under two hours! The fishing was red hot once again! As you can tell, they are all very happy. They are new customers, and we hope they will be back with us again soon. They had a beautiful day to fish as the Chesapeake Bay was pretty calm and the sun was shining.

April 22-23, 2009 - More Striped Bass Caught on Maryland's Chesapeake Bay!

It is time once again, for another installment of our adventures while fishing for Maryland rockfish on the Chesapeake Bay! Check out our picture from April 22, 2009. These fine folks are long-time customers who come back to us year after year. They came down to Hoopers Island on a foggy, rainy Wednesday morning. However, the stripers had other ideas as they were red hot. We had our limit within two hours! At one point, we had six lines go down all at once! There's nothing like the drama of when multiple lines get pulled down by 30-pound Chesapeake Bay striped bass! In the above picture, the second fish from the right was 41 inches in length! What a day!

April 21, 2009 - A Day to Remember

What a day we had on Tuesday! We left the dock at around 5:30 am, and after maneuvering through some crab pots set out on the Chesapeake Bay, we put our lines out just as the sun was coming up, in search of Maryland Rockfish. All of the fish that you see in the group of seven picture were caught before 9am! The trolling was red hot. At one point, we landed three fish at one time! Unfortunately, due to already meeting our limit of stripers for the day, we had to let two of them go.

Hello again,

Here is another one of my favorite recipes for cooking Chesapeake Bay striped bass.

Dill Weed Rockfish

Use a heavy-duty foil. Rub fillets with olive oil and lay them on a bed of yellow onions sliced about 1/4" thick. Squeeze lemon over the fillets and sprinkle with salt, pepper, and Old Bay. Sprinkle a heavy coat of dill weed on top. Close the foil and bake at 350 degrees for approximately 20 minutes. If the fillets flake apart, it is done.

Chesapeake Bay Trophy Rockfish Right Around the Corner

It's that time of year again! It's time to get ready for catching these big trophy striped bass in Maryland's Chesapeake Bay. The season starts on Saturday, April 18. The pictures attached to this article are from last spring to give you an idea of what I'm talking about. I haven't figured out how to insert the pictures into the posts here. We troll for these fish, pulling 20 lines at one time. There were a few times we had several hook-ups at the same time. Recent reports have indicated that the fish are here now, ready for us, and we're ready for them.

Given that this blog was just created, an introduction is in order. My name is Capt. Dave Schauber. I am a native to Maryland's Eastern Shore. I have fished on the Chesapeake Bay my entire life. From the late 1970s to the late 1990s, I operated sawmills for a living. After relocating to Dorchester County in 1981 to operate another sawmill, I quickly became known in the community as simply "The Sawyer", and I am still referred to by that title to this day. It is often confused with my last name. This is the origin of my business name, and hence the boat name.

The 2006 young-of-year striped bass survey, a measure of spawning success in the Chesapeake, is 4.3, well below the 53-year average of 12.0. While the annual survey has documented above average spawning success in three of the past six years, striped bass populations are well known for highly variable reproductive success and typically several average year-classes are interspersed with occasional large and small year-classes.

Annapolis, Maryland --Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR) announced today that the 2006 striped bass (rockfish) juvenile index, a measure of striped bass spawning success in Chesapeake Bay, is 4.3, well below the 53-year average of 12.0. During this year's survey, DNR biologists collected 561 young-of-year (YOY) striped bass.

Striped bass populations are well known for highly variable reproductive success from year to year. Typically, several years of average year-classes are interspersed with occasional large and small year-classes. Striped bass spawn in large numbers and individual females can produce millions of eggs to take advantage of favorable environmental conditions in some years. The survey has documented above average spawning success in three of the past six years (see attached chart).

Overall, reproduction of anadromous fish - those species that migrate into fresh water to spawn - was low this year, likely due to spring drought conditions. Similar drought conditions and low anadromous fish reproduction were observed in 2002. One notable exception this year occurred in the Potomac River, where biologists observed healthy numbers of juvenile American shad for the seventh consecutive year. Once the subject of a large commercial and recreational fishery, American shad are currently under a protective moratorium.

DNR biologists have monitored the reproductive success of striped bass and other species in Maryland's portion of the Chesapeake Bay annually since 1954. Twenty-two survey sites are located in the four major spawning systems: The Upper Bay and the Choptank, Potomac and Nanticoke rivers. Biologists visit each site monthly from July through September, collecting fish samples with two sweeps of a 100-foot beach seine. The index is calculated as the average catch of YOY fish per sample.

DNR Continues to Assist in Ocean City Beach Replenishment

The Ocean City Beach Replenishment, Periodic Nourishment Project is continuing to pump sand in an effort to replenish Ocean City beach. Since sand pumping began on September 19, approximately 400,000 cubic yards (cys) of sand have been pumped onto the beach. The work is expected to last until late November and place a total of 900,000 cys of sand along the beach. Project costs are shared by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the Town of Ocean City, Worcester County, and the State of Maryland.

Tilghman Island Water Trail Receives National Recognition

Annapolis, Maryland — The American Canoe Association (ACA) has named the Tilghman Island Water Trail in Talbot County as an "ACA-Recommended Water Trail" for 2006. The Trail joins 11 other trails across the United States in receiving this national distinction.

The Maryland Department of Natural Resources worked in partnership with the Talbot County Office of Tourism, the Chesapeake Watershed Archaeological Research Foundation, Inc., and community leaders and stakeholders to identify paddling opportunities in and around Tilghman Island, as well as to design and publish a trail map detailing the island's history, describing the waterman's way of life, and highlighting the area's waterfowl and aquatic resources.

To receive this honor, the Tilghman Island Water Trail had to meet the following ACA credentials:

* The trail must be a contiguous or semi-contiguous waterway or series of waterways that is open to recreational use by paddlers;
* The trail must have public access points for paddlers;
* The trail must be conveyed by a map, guide, signage or a website that is of reasonable quality and detail and available to the public;
* Published or printed materials for the trail (e.g. guidebook, map, signs, website) must communicate low-impact ethics to trail users; and
* The trail must be supported and/or managed by one or more organizations.

ACA-Recommended Water Trails earn the right to use a special ACA logo in maps, signs and other printed material related to the trail. This year's selections join 12 other outstanding trails selected as ACA-Recommended Trails in 2005, including Janes Island Water Trail in Crisfield.

The American Canoe Association is the nation's largest and oldest paddlesports membership association. First formed in 1880 on the shores of Lake George, New York, the ACA provides paddlesport education, supports paddlesport recreation programs, and advocates for sound stewardship of our nation's waterways.

Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission concerning striped bass management

States from New Hampshire through Maryland have scheduled their hearings to gather public comment on Draft Addendum I to Amendment 6 to the Interstate Fishery Management Plan for Atlantic Striped Bass. The dates, times and locations of the scheduled meetings follow:
