Sportsmen Against Hunger Week Marks its Fourth Year

Tucson, Arizona - As part of its ongoing efforts toward ending hunger, the SCI Foundation has proclaimed November 13-19, 2006 as its fourth annual Sportsmen Against Hunger Week. SCIF is once again challenging North American sportsmen and women to donate a portion of their harvests from this hunting season to the hungry in their communities.

"The turn out last year was incredible. Hunters everywhere did a wonderful job helping SCIF battle hunger in their communities," said SCIF Executive Director Tom Riley. "We are asking them to go above and beyond again this year. Hunters have the power to make hunger a thing of the past, and SCIF is happy to give them the opportunity."

Sportsmen Against Hunger is active in all 50 U.S. states, parts of Canada and in several countries around the world. Launched in 1989, this much-emulated program is supported by SCI's international network of almost 180 Chapters, over 48,000 SCI Members and other sportsmen who establish local drives, fundraisers and other program support efforts.

Last year, those who participated in Sportsmen Against Hunger Week provided the hungry across the United States with an overwhelming 79,139 pounds of processed game meat. This year, SCIF is looking to blow that number away by encouraging the outdoor sporting community to give even more of this high-protein, low-fat food resource.

Sportsmen and -women who are unsure where to take their harvests for donation can look to SCIF's online databases of nearly 400 licensed game processors and over 300 relief organizations across the United States that use wild game for local hunger programs. These easy-to-use databases are located at www.sci-foundation.org/humanitarian/sah/>www.sci-foundation.org/humanitarian/sah/. Many of the processing companies and relief organizations are willing to pay for part or all of the processing and/or transportation costs.

To learn more, please contact SCIF Humanitarian Services Coordinator Eva Wilson at 520-620-1220, ext. 480; ewilson@safariclub.org.

The SCI Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit charitable organization that funds and manages worldwide programs dedicated to wildlife conservation, outdoor education and humanitarian services, including such programs as Sportsmen Against Hunger, Sensory Safari, SafariCare, Disabled Hunter, the American Wilderness Leadership School, Becoming an Outdoors Woman & More and Youth Education Seminars (YES) Outdoors. Call 877-877-3265 or visit www.sci-foundation.org for more.

SCI's record-breaking 34th Annual Hunters' Convention hosted more than 19,700 sportsmen from 50 countries around the world. Thanks to over 1,100 top exhibitors helping hunters realize dreams around the globe, the Convention raised nearly $11 million for SCI and the SCI Foundation. To register to attend SCI's 35th Annual Hunters' Convention, in Reno Jan. 24-27, 2007, call 888-746-9724 toll-free or visit www.safariclub.org.

During SCI's 34th Annual Hunters' Convention, the SCI Foundation beat past records for its annual Sportsmen Against Hunger "Feed the Hungry" Feast. Hosted with the Salvation Army Reno and Reno-area businesses, charitable organizations and individuals, the Feast fed some 1,200 of Reno's homeless, under-housed, and hungry. At the 2007 SCI Convention, the SCI Foundation is looking to feed even more Reno needy.

Public input sought on Arizona Game and Fish strategic plan

Phoenix, Arizona - The Arizona Game and Fish Department is seeking public comment on its draft "Wildlife 2012" plan, a strategic plan that will guide how the agency manages wildlife, outdoor recreational opportunities and its own operations for the years 2007-2012.

The department develops a new strategic plan every six years.

The draft document is posted for review on the department's Web site at http://www.azgfd.gov/inside_azgfd/strategic_plan.shtml. Six public meetings will be held around the state in September to provide an overview. Written comment will be accepted until Oct. 6.

"Public input will be important in helping us finalize the plan," says Bruce Taubert, the department's assistant director for wildlife management. "Everyone has a stake in the continued health of our state's wildlife populations and in future recreational opportunities. It's important to make your viewpoint known."

"Wildlife 2012" reflects the management direction the Arizona Game and Fish Commission has provided to the department for the next six years. The plan outlines priorities and strategic goals affecting four areas: wildlife management, off-highway vehicle recreation, watercraft recreation, and department administration.

"Wildlife 2012 is different from past department strategic plans," says Taubert. "Those plans included a lot of day-to-day detail and were not very user-friendly for the public. This plan is much more concise, providing a broad overview of our goals and priorities."

Taubert says the detailed action steps included in past strategic plans will now be incorporated into separate operational and implementation plans.

For a list of public meetings, visit http://www.azgfd.gov/artman/publish/article_592.shtml. The public meetings will include a presentation on the planning process and an overview of the plan's highlights.

Written comment can be submitted through Oct. 6, either by e-mail to wildlife2012plan@azgfd.gov or by U.S. mail to Wildlife 2012, c/o Funds & Planning, Arizona Game and Fish Department, 2221 W. Greenway Road, Phoenix, AZ 85023-4399.
