Oklahoma Expands Trout Fishing Opportunities

Oklahoma’s Wildlife Department recently added to and improved the Lower Mountain Fork River system.

With bulldozers, backhoes and a good deal of imagination, streams biologists created a brand new ¼-mile trout stream, dubbed Lost Creek. Water was diverted into an ancient stream channel through dense woods and boulders creating a unique area for anglers to try to fool wary trout.

Trout return to the Panhandle - winter trout season begins Nov. 1 at seven Department trout areas

After a year's absence, trout are returning to the Oklahoma Panhandle. Summer rains provided about 30 acres of water to the once dry Lake Carl Etling near Boise City.
"It is great to have this trout area open once again. We are stocking about 1,000 pounds of rainbow trout including about 35 fish at least 14 inches long," said John Stahl, northwest region fisheries supervisor. Beginning Nov. 1, trout season opens at the seven designated winter trout areas managed by the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation. These fisheries provide trout fishing in areas where warm water temperatures are not suitable for trout during the summer.

Kids To Compete In All-American Fishing Challenge

Six young anglers from Washington, New Jersey and Florida, will be the guests of honor at the first-ever Wal-Mart Kids All-American Fishing Challenge and Family Fishing Festival presented by Zebco August 19-20, in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
The visiting youngsters are: C.J. Barnhill, age 13, De Queen Ark.; Sean Cleland, age 11, Naples, Fla.; Analissa Merrill, age 11, Lynnwood, Wash.; Alyssa Meyer, age 10, Secaucus, N.J.; Ian Richmond, age 15, Riverside, Ohio; and Jonny Schultz, age 10, West Bend, Wis. The trip is part of a prize package that each kid earned, along with a $5,000 scholarship, by being selected to the Kids All-American Fishing Ambassador Team through a national application process.
