Biologists recently treated a 21-mile stretch of Diamond Fork with rotenone to remove non-native brown trout and stock Diamond Fork with Bonneville cutthroat trout, a species that once thrived in Utah.
Initial results show the treatment was a success, although biologists will treat the area again on Sept. 20. The treatment area begins about 10 miles from the mouth of Diamond Fork Canyon, at the Three Forks area, and continues upstream to its headwaters.
An important tool for fisheries biologists and a fun fish to catch
What happens when you cross a northern pike with a muskellunge (musky)? You get a handy-dandy management tool called the tiger musky (named for their tiger-like stripes).
Tiger musky grow fast. These tiger musky were only three inches long when they were stocked into Bullock Reservoir a year ago.
Photo by Ron Stewart The tiger musky is an important tool for Utah's fisheries biologists because a) it's a super predator and b) it's sterile. This makes it an ideal fish to use to help control populations of other fish.
