Hi out there I have been making my own flies now for a few years and I use to and going to get back into making my own fishing poles. Now I am trying something new, I am making my own balsa wood fishng lures. I have four shaped bodies at this point all from some small cutes on a jigs saw and alot of sanding. I am very excited at what I have come up with once I get a chance I will post some pictures.

Trout in the local parks

Just wanted to know what every one thinks about trout in our local parks. For me it is great trout fishing with hand tied flies in the parks near my house. Being married with children I don't get much chance to do real fishining anymore, so this affords me my best shot at having fun fishing.

Monroe Takes Busch Shootout

GRAPEVINE, Texas - There?s a reason Ish Monroe is building a house in the Lone Star State.

The Hughson, Calif., pro won his first Bassmaster title at the season-opening CITGO Bassmaster Elite Series tournament- the Battle on the Border- on Lake Amistad in Del Rio, Texas, in March.

Monroe ended his season Saturday by winning the Busch Shootout on Grapevine Lake.

The BUSCH Shootout will air Saturday, October 21, on ESPN2 at 10 a.m. ET.? It will reair Oct. 24, Nov. 7, Dec. 8 and Dec. 30.?

??I love Texas,? a delighted Monroe shouted Saturday at the weigh-in at Scott?s Landing Marina after defeating fellow Californian Fred Roumbanis in the final round of the BUSCH Shootout to win the $100,000 top prize.

Monroe, of Hughson, Calif., who is building a house in Del Rio, caught five bass weighing 7 pounds, 6 ounces, including one of about 4 pounds. Roumbanis, of Auburn, Calif., had one fish weighing 3-3.

?It got really, really tough,? Roumbanis said. ?My fish left. They weren?t in the same areas. The conditions were right. Everything was right. I think it came down to a lack of knowing the lake.?

That was the second time Monroe and Roumbanis finished 1-2 respectively. In the Battle on the Border, Monroe caught a four-day total of 104-8. Roumbanis was second at 101-13.

Monroe qualified for the BUSCH Shootout with a catch weighing 34-1 on the third day at Amistad. Roumbanis qualified with a weight of 28-1 on the final day at Amistad.

The Shootout featured the 10 anglers who weighed the heaviest single-day catches during 2006 Elite Series and the three anglers who weighed the heaviest one-day bags at the 2006 Bassmaster Classic, the 2006 Federation Nation Championship and the 2005 Open Championship.

After fishing Friday, the four anglers with the heaviest weights qualified to fish Saturday. Denny Brauer of Camdenton, Mo., led the way at 23-4, followed by Monroe at 15-15, Kevin Wirth of Crestwood, Ky., at 15-1 and Roumbanis at 14-12. As the top seed, Brauer fished against Roumbanis Saturday morning while Monroe and Wirth squared off.

Roumbanis, a second-year pro, shocked the crowd assembled for the weigh-in by beating Brauer, 57, the 1998 Bassmaster Classic champion and the 2006 Toyota Horizon Winner. Roumbanis had three fish weighing 5-6. Brauer had two fish weighing 5-1.

Monroe had a five-fish limit weighing 6-4 to beat Wirth, who had one fish weighing 2-14.
?
?The key is always make sure you come in with five,? said Monroe, who caught his limit by a dam where the water was flowing, then fished around some docks where he caught a few more fish.
?
Monroe went back to the dam Saturday afternoon and never left. The spot had produced a bass of 7-11 for Monroe Friday morning and he hoped to catch a limit, then go for a kicker fish -- a big bass that would boost his weight.

It took him 90 minutes to catch a small keeper bass on a small plastic worm. Then he switched to a Tru Tungsten jig with a grub catching a number of bass.

??That?s a problem that I?ve had for a lot of years. Finishing,? Monroe said. ?It comes to a point where you have to close. You catch five, then you have to go out and catch that kicker fish. I feel that?s going to help my career.?

Click here to download related photos of the BUSCH Shootout.?

BUSCH beer is the ?Official Beer of BASS,? and committed to supporting BASS anglers across the country through its current association with BASS, and its sponsorship of Denny Brauer, 16-time winner of the CITGO Bassmaster Tournament Trail and 1987 BASS Angler of the Year.?

CDFG Offers Free Fishing Day on Sept. 23

What better way to close out the summer than with a free day of fishing in one of California's gorgeous lakes, streams, waterways or the Pacific Ocean. For the second time this year, the Department of Fish and Game (DFG) invites anglers to participate in Free Fishing Day, set for Sept. 23.

The complimentary day of fishing sets aside the normal requirement for anyone 16 years and older to possess a California fishing license. All other fishing regulations, such as bag and size limits, gear restrictions, fishing hours and stream closures, remain in effect. The earlier Free Fishing Day was June 10.

"California has the most spectacular angling opportunities available anywhere in the country," said DFG Director Ryan Broddrick. "DFG's Free Fishing Day is a fantastic chance to enjoy the outdoors and a great day of fishing."

The state offers more than 30,000 miles of rivers and streams, 4,800 lakes and reservoirs, and 80 major rivers. It also has more than 1,100 miles of coastline, and hundreds of native fish species.

DFG offers several fishing-related programs designed to help everyone enjoy one of the nation's most popular outdoor recreational sports.

For the novice angler, DFG offers Fishing in the City, part of the Urban Fishing Program. The idea began in 1993, to provide fishing opportunities to Californians living in the Sacramento, San Francisco and Los Angeles metropolitan areas. Fishing in the City clinics teach kids how to fish, and provides the chance to fish close to home. DFG stocks dozens of ponds with trout in winter and catfish the rest of the year. More information is available at www.dfg.ca.gov/oceo/fishcity/.

For those more confident in the fishing experience, DFG offers the California Heritage Trout Challenge. The Challenge tests anglers' ability to catch six different forms of California native trout from their historic drainages. Successful anglers can receive a personalized certificate, featuring beautiful artwork of renowned fish illustrator Joseph Tomelleri. Part of the Challenge includes learning more about the state's native trout, where people can find them, and what DFG has done to conserve and restore these heritage trout. More information is available at www.dfg.ca.gov/fishing/html/WildAndHeritageTrout/WHTrout_0.htm

Free Fishing Day can also help launch new anglers into the Department's new fishing incentive and angler recognition program called the California Fishing Passport program. The program, which just completed a three-stage summer pilot program geared just to children, will highlight all of the state's fishing opportunities within ocean waters, lakes and reservoirs, streams and rivers, and the delta system. More than 1,000 kids have already gotten a headstart on this program. The official Passport program kicks-off for people of all ages and skill levels in January 2007. With a passport booklet as a guide, all anglers will be encouraged to catch all of the different sport fish species that occur in the state. More than 150 different species of freshwater fish, saltwater fish, and a number of ocean shellfish species can be found in California and are included as part of the Passport Challenge. Look for the new California Fishing Passport books to be available free of charge beginning Jan. 1. More information is available at www.fishingpassport.org.

Free Fishing Day has served as a springboard for people to connect to the tradition of fishing. Statistics from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service indicate that more than 44 million Americans consider themselves anglers, with the largest portion coming from California.

The national pastime contributed toward a $116 billion-a-year impact on the nation's economy, with only swimming considered more popular as an outdoor recreational activity.

For those who catch the fishing bug after the upcoming free opportunity, DFG offers several options to keep the fishing line flying.

DFG's License and Revenue Branch offers a one- and two-day license. A full year sport fishing license for California residents is $34.90. Fees for licenses that are available from license agents include 5 percent license agent handling fee.

Serious anglers - or anglers who want to become serious - can save money by purchasing a lifetime license. DFG bases lifetime license fees on the licensee's age at the time of purchase as follows: Birth to 9 years, $300; age 10 to 39, $495; age 40 to 61, $445; age 62 and older, $300.

Draft Environmental Review Document Available Sept. 1 for the Proposed Lake Davis Pike Eradication Project

Public comment begins Sept. 1 on the proposed Lake Davis Pike Eradication project's joint draft environmental review document, according to the California Department of Fish and Game (DFG). Four public hearings have been scheduled that will take place in September and October. The comment period is scheduled to run for 45 days, from Sept. 1 to Oct. 16.

The public may provide verbal and written comment at the hearings scheduled on Tuesday, Sept. 26, 2006 - Two sessions, 1 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 9 p.m., Portola Station Baptist Church, 171 S. Gulling Street, Portola; and Thursday, Oct. 5, 2006 - Two sessions, 1 to 4 p.m., and 6 to 9 p.m., National University, Room 120, 9320 Tech Center Dr., Sacramento. Written comments may also be submitted by e-mail by going to the Web site at www.dfg.ca.gov/northernpike, or by fax, hand-delivery, or U.S. mail. Verbal comments, in addition to the hearings, may be submitted to the U.S. Forest Service, Plumas National Forest (PNF) by appointment. Call (530) 283-7761 to make an appointment.

The Draft Environmental Impact Report/Environmental Impact Statement (EIR/EIS) was prepared by Entrix, Inc. for DFG and the PNF, for the proposed project. The Draft EIR/EIS addresses the potential environmental effects that could result from the proposed project, as well as proposed project alternatives. An Initial Study was prepared and distributed in September 2005.

The Draft EIR/EIS and supporting documents are available on the DFG Web site at www.dfg.ca.gov/northernpike and upon request at (916) 445-3584. Copies of the Draft EIR/EIS are available to review at the following locations:

DFG, 4001 N. Wilson Way, Stockton DFG, 1701 Nimbus Road, Suite A, Rancho Cordova DFG, 1416 9th St., 1st Floor, Office of Communications, Sacramento Plumas National Forest, Beckwourth Ranger District, 23 Mohawk Road, Blairsden Plumas National Forest, 159 Lawrence St., Quincy Sacramento Public Library, 828 I St., Sacramento Plumas County Library, 445 Jackson St., Quincy, Plumas County Library Portola Branch, 34 Third Ave., Portola Portola City Hall, 35 Third Ave., Portola

With the release of the Draft EIR/EIS on Sept. 1, 2006, a 45-day comment period will begin, ending at 5 p.m. on Oct. 16, 2006. Comments must be postmarked or received by Oct. 16. Please mail, FAX, or hand deliver written comments to DFG and PNF at:

Lake Davis Pike Eradication Project
Department of Fish and Game
1812 9th St., Attention: Ed Pert
Sacramento, CA 95814
FAX: (916) 445-4044

Lake Davis, the only body of water in California where pike are known to exist, is a State Water Project reservoir located within Plumas County and the PNF, approximately six miles upstream of the confluence of Big Grizzly Creek with the Middle Fork Feather River, and five miles north of the town of Portola on State Highway 70. Lake Davis drains into the Middle Fork Feather River, which ends at Lake Oroville. From Lake Oroville, water flows into the Feather River, then into the Sacramento River, and then into the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta. The project area comprises the area directly affected by the project alternatives, including treatment and neutralization activities.

The DFG proposes to eradicate pike from Lake Davis and its tributaries to re-establish the trout fishery at Lake Davis and to prevent the pike from escaping from the reservoir and causing ecological impacts in other parts of the state. The primary goal of the project is complete eradication of pike from Lake Davis and its tributaries. The project would be approved and implemented by the DFG. The PNF action for the project is the issuance of a special use permit to the DFG and potentially two forest closure orders.

Seven project alternatives are evaluated in the Draft EIR/EIS, including the Proposed Project/Proposed Action, which involves the draw down of Lake Davis to approximately 15,000 acre-feet and the application of liquid rotenone to the reservoir and its tributaries. One alternative would use powdered rotenone only to treat the reservoir at this same volume. Three other alternatives also involve liquid rotenone treatment of Lake Davis and its tributaries, utilizing varying degrees of a lake drawdown One alternative is a non-chemical alternative, involving the complete dewatering of the reservoir and its tributaries, and there is also a No Project/No Action alternative. In addition, the document analyzes four options for neutralization of treated water in Lake Davis, which could be discharged into Big Grizzly Creek.

The document evaluates the impact all the alternatives could have on physical, biological, human and environmental resources. DFG hopes to decide on whether or not to implement a project in January 2007.

California Trying To Create Network 0f Marine Protected Areas

The California Fish and Game Commission has voted to select a preferred proposal for a network of marine protected areas (MPAs) along the state’s central coast, from Pigeon Point to Point Conception. The proposal includes more than two dozen MPAs covering more than 200 square miles of state waters in the central coast region.

The selected proposal includes 29 MPAs representing approximately 204 square miles (or 18 percent) of state waters along the central coast. Approximately 8 percent of this total area (94 square miles) is proposed to be designated as state marine reserves (no take) while the remainder would allow some form of recreational and/or commercial fishing.

Opportunities Abound with Becoming an Outdoors-Woman Program

Once again, Wilderness Unlimited is offering the newly formed Becoming an Outdoors-Woman, California organization an opportunity to conduct a fly fishing workshop on its Bidwell Ranch property.

If you are interested in learning to fly fish from expert instructors in one of the most beautiful places in California, this is the class for you. This year there will be sessions for beginners and intermediates. There are only 30 slots available in this class. Reservations are on a first-come, first-served basis.

Deadline to apply is Sept. 10. Space is limited.

This Beyond BOW California workshop is scheduled for Sept. 22-24. The location is Bidwell Ranch in Shasta County. Wilderness Unlimited has operated a fly-fishing school on this property for more than 25 years. The clinic is world-renowned and led by a team of experts. Located in the Hat Creek Valley of Shasta County, this beautiful ranch has four ponds and approximately 1.5 miles of Lost Creek. Open permanent pastures and hay fields flanked by the famous Hat Creek Rim on the east and scattered juniper and brushy lava flows around the rest of the property add to the scenic setting.

This comprehensive workshop will cover all of the basics of fly-fishing: casting, reading the water, entomology, conservation, fly tying, knots, landing and releasing, and plenty of hands-on practice. In addition, for the intermediates there will be an obstacle course. Registration is at 8:30 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 22. Departure is Sunday afternoon. Arrival on Thursday evening is preferable. All equipment will be provided, including four flies. If you need more flies, you can bring your own or purchase at a drastically reduced price at the workshop.

The cost of the workshop is $200 per person, a fraction of what is typically charged for this popular clinic. We will be camping at the ranch so you will need to bring your tent, sleeping bag/bed roll, and food for as long as you stay (Don't forget the water.) A California sports fishing license is required.

For more information and to sign up for the workshop, go to www.bowcalifornia.org or call Susan Herrgesell at (530) 347-0227.
