Wyoming Stops Flush Of North Platte River

The Wyoming Game and Fish Department announced it won’t request a flushing flow on the North Platte River this fall to retain as much water as possible in Pathfinder Reservoir to aid fish condition over the winter.

“By not having a fall flushing flow there will be more water in Pathfinder this winter and that will benefit the trout and walleyes in that fishery,” says Al Conder, fish supervisor for the Casper Region. Flushing flows are used to clean riffles, improve trout spawning habitat and increase insect and forage fish populations for food availability in the river.

Tiger Trout Makes Wyoming Record Books

When Encampment resident Greg Salisbury recently caught a large trout in the new High Savery Reservoir, he suspected he had record-class fish—he just didn’t know what species.

The fish, which was later identified as a hybrid tiger trout (a cross between a brook and brown trout) hit a gold spinner and weighed 1 pound, 10.4 ounces and measured 16 1/2 inches long. Salisbury has the honor of holding the first Wyoming record for the species.

COLORADO RIVER CUTTHROAT TROUT GET BOOST

TEN SLEEP- The Colorado River cutthroat trout have found a new, temporary home in the newly renovated Wigwam rearing station east of Ten Sleep.

Three earthen ponds had previously been used for rearing the majority of the station’s brood stock. However, disease was discovered in the ponds, making them unsuitable. “The bad news came when we discovered the organism that causes whirling disease in the brood ponds; the good news came when the legislature allocated enough money to help replace the ponds with circular tanks,” said Tim Kurtz, the superintendent of the Wyoming Game and Fish Department’s Wigwam rearing station.

CHEYENNE - Wildlife and outdoor enthusiasts can try their hand at being a wildlife biologist and help gather information about six of Wyoming’s sensitive species thanks to a new program from the Wyoming Game and Fish Department.

CHEYENNE - The vast majority of anglers don’t break fishing regulations or laws. But a small percentage - either accidentally or intentionally -- commit violations in pursuit of Wyoming trout and other species.
"The type of fishing violations stays pretty consistent from year to year," said Mike Choma, the Wyoming Game and Fish Department’s enforcement coordinator. "Although some violations are blatantly intentional such as overlimit or a nonresident buying a resident license, many violations are out of ignorance because an angler didn’t read the regulation. We want to help anglers stay on the right side of the law."
