You can use the same methods of locating crappie that you would use during the day when you plan on crappie fishing at night. Crappies will still be hanging out at natural crappie habitat during the night. When you decide on the body of water you plan to go crappie fishing at night on you will have to do some preliminary scouting during the light hours to locate likely night fishing for crappie hot spots. The best spots will be secluded and blocked by the wind, with very little current.
You want your night fishing lights to be able to work effectively and wind can have some adverse effects when you are trying to attract zooplankton and baitfish while you are crappie night fishing.

Good spots that normally hold fish at night are bridges, artificial fish attractors that many states place in the water to attract crappie and other game fish species. Also rocky shorelines and points that are out of the wind and current could be likely spots to find crappie. (specks)

It is important that there is a wind break and no current because you want to attract zooplankton to your area using two basic types of night fishing lights which are a underwater fishing light, and a floating fishing light. Once you attract the zooplankton baitfish will soon to follow, as well as the white perch (crappie) your crappie fishing at night trip will become very active. You could catch some of those large trophy slabs everyone always talks about. Large crappie seem to be more active at night and are less wary.

You will to set up your 12 volt fishing lights and floating fishing lights close together and in pairs, If you have more then one set. It is my preference to drop and anchor my submerged fishing light first and then position a 12 volt fishing light on top near the underwater fishing light. If you have 2 sets, you could put 1 pair of 12 volt fishing light set ups at each end of your boat.

It is best to have multiple crappie fishing rigs set up to with a variety of different crappie baits. The floating fishing lights will be attracting insects close to the surface so you will want to have one crappie pole or more, set up with a 1/8ounce or smaller crappie hair looking jig that looks like an insects. A little trick that always seems to work for me is to bounce the crappie jig off the floating fishing light so it looks like a jumping bug falling into the water. You should also have at least one crappie rig set up to fish at a deeper depth down around your underwater fishing lights. These crappie poles need to be set up with crappie live baits like shad or crappie minnows. Once you start to see swarms of baitfish around your underwater fishing and insects around your floating fishing lights that when the fun will start!

Chumming for crappie is a common practice that is often done when you are crappie fishing at night. This practice is often recommended as a crappie night fishing tip and is not illegal in most states. You should check with your local states department of natural recourse to get your states fishing regulations.

There are numerous ways to set up a chum set when you plan on chumming for crappie. Also there are numerous types of chum you can use for your set up. We only will be talking about one type of chum in our set up instructions today. Catching crappie at night can be very exciting if you use a chumming for crappie set up along with other important crappie night fishing tips.

One common practice that has worked for me is to create a cum set that release small crappie minnow fish guts slowly into the water around where you have your underwater crappie night fishing light set up.

Making Your Chumming For Crappie Set Up

My favorite type of chum to use for crappie fishing at night is crappie minnow fish guts. You do not have to spend a lot of money for a expensive chumming for crappie set up you can make one for your self with little expense. Get yourself about 4 dozen crappie minnows and crush them up into a pan like a baking pan so can save all the juices. Make sure they are crushed into small pieces.

Next get yourself a 5lb coffee can and puncture holes all around the can and on the bottom about 1 to 2 inches apart. Next find a good size weight you can use for an anchor to be attached to a line on one and attached to the coffee can on the other end. The distance between the anchor weight and the coffee can should be between 18 and 24 inches. You want your can to suspend at different depths because the crappie may be suspended at different depths. You want the small pieces of fish guts and the blood juices to slowly dissipate into the water around where you have set up your crappie fishing at night under water light.

Next, tie a line to the top of the can so you can lower your chumming for crappie setup into the water and tie it off to the side of your boat. Next fill up two or three freezer bags with guts and blood from the pan. Make sure you only fill the bag about ¾ full. Next attach the freezer bag to the bottom of the coffee can, make it does not come loose. Rubber bands work well for this. Next drop the can with your chumming for crappie set up over the side of the boat to a set depth. You may have to adjust this depth occasionally. Now you are all ready to catch some crappies at night.

If the water clarity is murky and the day is somewhat over cast I would select a dark chartreuse color.I want to make it perfectly clear that color selection for your jigs may not always be correct your first pick, you need to understand that there is much trial and error when you fish for crappie with artificial baits, and you may try several colors before you hit on the right combination for the day.

How many types of jigs are there?

There are mainly three types of crappie fishing jigs. Curly tail jigs, Marabou jigs, and Rooster tail jigs. Curly tail jigs come in a multiple of designs but the all have some type of tail and are made of plastic.
