Walleye fishing is a fascinating sport, and there is nothing like catching these fish to make a fishing trip enjoyable. The walleye is a species of fish that is native to Canada and the northern United States. The name walleye comes from the fact that the eyes of this fish reflect light, the way the eyes of a cat do. It is olive or gold in color, with the maximum size ever recorded of a walleye being 42 inches long and 25 pounds in weight. Walleye is considered by many people to be the best tasting freshwater fish, and sport fishermen seek it out as well as commercial fishing companies.
When you are fishing for walleye the weather has the most influence where walleyes will be located and how active they will be feeding.For example if it is a warm and sunny day walleyes will head for deeper waters or underwater structure to stay cool, and shield their light sensitive eyes. If it is a nice sunny day with very little wind, do your fishing for walleye in deep water, in the thick weed beds or at underwater structure points because the surface water will be much to warm.
If when you get out on the water the sun is bright overhead but there is a good wave chop, you will find walleye anywhere. The waves cool and turn the water and they redirect the suns rays. One of the very best times to catch your walleye limit is right before a storm when the sky is dark and overcast and the waves are active. Walleyes tend to become very aggressive at these times. Just remember that the walleye species is sometime very unpredictable, but using the weather conditions to pin point a good starting point to fish is an excellent idea.
The weather is just one indicator when you are trying to locate walleye. It is by no means always 100%. You should still use your GPS fishing finder also. But if you use these two methods to put you on fish you can save time and increase your chances of getting your walleye catch limit. But remember the walleye species may surprise you . Do not depend 100% on these two walleye fishing indicators to put you on fish. Identify some other water areas if these indicators fail. Like I have said walleye can be very finicky and unpredictable fish at times. I think this one of the reasons they are one of the most sought after game fish.

Normally, walleye will move closer to shore when the water temperature drops in the cooler months. The fish then start to move to deeper water and structured areas as the water temperature starts to rise. But this not always true, I have done my walleye fishing close to shore and caught fish in the dead heat of mid summer. When you decide where you want to go on your next fishing trip in the summer months it is time to do some pre-planning. If you want to save precious fishing time then you need to construct a plan for the start of your fishing trip. I have provide you below some simple walleye fishing tips for fishing walleye live baits in the summer..
#1 Pick up a topographical map of the area you plan to fish.
Identify on the map all the weed bed areas. Next circle any weed bed areas that have a significant depth drop off of more than 3 feet , adjacent to the weed bed area. These areas can be walleye fishing sweet spots with the right weather conditions.
#2 Contact a local bait shop.
Do some research and find a local bait dealer or fishing chat room that is local to the area you are going to be fishing. I am surprised how many people forget this important pre-planning walleye fishing tip. Find out what are the most used and most effective live baits. Make sure you ask specific questions for the time of the year you plan to fish these local areas.
#3 Attach shinny spinner blades and rattles to your live bait walleye fishing rigs.
For added attraction, you can add shinny spinner blades and line rattles. Walleyes are attracted to flashes and they can hear the rattle vibrating in the water.
# 4 Suggested live baits for walleye fishing:
Spring and early summer live minnows are the best live bait. Note your interview with the local bait shop can be a very important resource. All minnows are not created equal when it comes to walleye fishing. You need to use minnows that are native to the area you plan to fish, and that are part of the local area’s walleye populations normal diet. In summer into early fall I have had the best luck with ribbon leach and large night crawler live bait combinations.
#5 Weather conditions:
5a When you get out on the water and the sun is heavy, and there is no wave action head for the weed beds. Go deep into the weed beds to find open pockets. You still need to be quiet as you approach so use a paddle or you can use one of your boat oar as a paddle. Make sure your walleye fishing rig is spooled with at least 12 lb test line and use at least a 1/4oz jig chartreuse in color if the water is stained with a chartreuse curly tail tipped with a ribbon leach or night crawler. Vertical jig the open holes in the weed beds.
5b When there is a wave chop , regardless if it sunny out or not head to the weed bed areas you have circled that have a adjacent depth drop off. Fish these areas by back trolling or drifting with bottom bouncing live bait rigs. Vary the length of the trailing leader until you get the right combination. These areas can be walleye fishing sweet spots when there are wavy choppy water weather conditions.
